I Want To Monitor My Child's Phone. Do I Need Access To It?

I have a child who is constantly on their phone. However, it's hard for me to get physical access to it to see what she is up to. Also, she won't let me friend her on her social media accounts. I am worried that with all the online dangers, that they could be next. My question is, Is it possibly to cell phone spy with no access to it?
